Strength training is the use of training and exercise to increase the strength and mass of muscles. Incorporating this type of training into your exercise regimen has many functional and overall wellness benefits. There are also a variety of methods that employ strength training, which makes it easy to find one that works for you.

Aside from improving overall wellness, it can improve many body functions. This type of training can increase bone, muscle, tendon, and ligament strength & toughness, which can prevent injury and increase overall body health. You can also enjoy improved joint function and increased bone density. Greater strength being the most obvious benefit, it will also improve cardiovascular function which can prevent heart disease and other illnesses.

In order to effectively perform strength-training exercises, it's important to study proper form and function so as to avoid injury and maximize results. For some, it's a good idea to enlist the help of a personal trainer as you enter into a training program, as you risk injury when performing the exercises incorrectly. Weight training is a common way to build strength. Things like diet and nutrition play important roles in weight training activities. Resistance training is another common way to build strength in muscle groups. Isometric training is also frequently used as a means to train for strength and endurance.

With so many benefits coming from strength training exercises, it's no wonder so many people incorporate them into their regular workout routines. Keeping in mind proper form is important so you avoid injury when attempting new exercises like this, as is proper nutrition. Always be sure to take in enough calories to allow your body to build muscle strength, otherwise you workouts will yield little results. Whatever your ultimate fitness goals might be bringing some of these techniques to you workout will increase results.

Train the muscle not the joint.

In my 20 plus years in the Fitness industry I consistently see people training to move the weight, not really training the muscle. Most of this is due to ego with little regard for improving their physiques. There are Sport Specific exercises to increase ones strength, explosiveness, and power. These exercises, when done correctly, are great. The key is when done correctly.
Unless you are training for a specific event (Power Lifting) or belong to a football team you should steer away from these exercises. In the long run you will end up with inflammed joints and years of pain and discomfort.
My advice, start to learn about the "mind to muscle" connection and train the muscle. Of course this would take stripping off some of the weight you usually use. In the long run you will train each muscle completely from insertion to articulation. This will drive more blood into the trained, or targeted muscle group. You will feel a bigger pump and the only thing that will be sore will be the muscle itself.
When you add a good diet and supplementation program to the mix you will see amazing changes, for the good, to your physique. So leave the ego at the door the next time you enter the gym, your joints will thank you for it.
